"...the truth of the forest may be more clearly and vividly revealed by the contemplation of a small area than it could by donning ten-league boots, covering a continent but uncovering little."
--David George Haskell, The Forest Unseen
We see a lot in our hectic days, but how much of that do we truly perceive? If we paused for a bit each day in the same spot, what might we learn...about our surroundings, ourselves, other beings? Biologist David George Haskell wondered just that and then followed through on his question. He visited a small plot in a forest, almost daily for a year. What he discovered during an annual cycle of seasons should be incentive for us all to choose to see.
Join David in the North Woods to learn about his year of observations and how you too could hone your ecological understanding. Gather at Acc. # 11472*A, Acer truncatum (purpleblow maple), at 5:30pm on Tuesday, April 11. Follow signs from the Arborway gate along Meadow Road to the North Woods dell.
Parking: Park along the Arborway near the Arborway Gate.
Public Transportation: Take the MBTA Orange Line to Forest Hills. At the upper level of the station, cross Washington Street and go to the right. Walk west on Custer Street to the Arborway and cross at the lights to the Arboretum.
See map of gate locations.

Tree Mobs are interactions with scientists or other specialists at the Arnold Arboretum, and provide another pathway to enjoy and learn in the landscape. Experts share little-known facts about our living plant collection, its relevance today, and its importance to future generations. A Tree Mob may attract a small group or a large gathering—we won’t know until it takes place. Join us in the landscape and discover something new. Tree Mobs are date, time, and location specific. See details above.
